Jazz Giants: Photographs by Herman Leonard

BowHaus True Black and White™ Pigment Prints at Fahey/Klein Gallery LA
The innovative True Black and White™ pigment printing process* pioneered by BowHaus currently produces some of the most powerful and exquisite black and white prints in exhibition at galleries around the world. One of the latest exhibitions produced using BowHaus technology is a collection of the works of a Smithsonian-Institute honored photographer Herman Leonard. Since the 1950’s Leonard has captured the likeness of celebrities, politicians, musicians and film stars, and at one point served as a personal photographer to Marlon Brando.
Leonard’s “Jazz Giants” exhibit is a mural-sized photographic documentary of the Jazz Age, and features the likes of Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. The collection was salvaged while over 6,000 of Leonard’s other prized works from the past 60 years were lost in 2005, along with his home, studio and darkroom, in Hurricane Katrina. With this collection, Leonard revives a journey through the golden years of the Jazz, Blues and Bebop eras and documents several larger-than-life legends, recanting a significant chapter in the history of music in America.
This exhibit shows Leonard’s work for the first time in large format. And the prints in his “Jazz Giants” exhibit were created using the proprietary InkJet Control™ and OpenPrintMaker™ technology developed by BowHaus.
To make the prints, BowHaus produced 400Mb Crosfield drum scans from Leonard’s black and white negatives (most of which were 4”x 5”).
The Herman Leonard “Jazz Giants” exhibit opens November 30, 2006 at the Fahey/Klein Gallery in Los Angeles. Click here for more info on Herman Leonard’s Exhibit.
* BowHaus is transforming the way that the Art World views digital printmaking with a revolutionary, True Black and White™, archival, pigment-ink printing process. A combination of artistry, technique, and proprietary software, the BowHaus True Black and White™ approach produces longer-lasting, museum quality, monochrome prints by using shades of gray/black pigmented inks. This approach eliminates or minimizes the use of faster-fading color inks.
A BowHaus True Black and White™ print has a vast tonal range with bright highlights and rich, deep blacks. But these prints are not only stunning in appearance. They are powerful and durable works of art, with intensely immersive blacks and gorgeously smooth tonal transitions. Acclaimed fine art photographers and galleries are now choosing BowHaus to produce their Master and Exhibition prints because its proprietary True Black and White™ approach results in stunning monochrome pigment prints that are more archival and fade-resistant – qualities that are appreciated by photographers and collectors alike.
BowHaus blends art and technology to create superior quality, longer lasting true black and white prints on Canon, Epson, HP, and Roland printers, at measurements up to 60” wide.
